A Breast Augmentation Explained

A breast augmentation, or augmentation mammaplasty, increases breast volume, creates more symmetrical breasts, and sculpts breasts to be smoother, rounder, and more aesthetically pleasing. A breast augmentation is designed for those who have a smaller  breast size than they desire due to genetics or who have lost breast volume due to weight loss or pregnancy.

What Is The Procedure Like?

Breast augmentation is performed in the convenience of the office operating room as an ambulatory procedure. Incisions are placed under the breast, at the edge of the areola near the nipple or in the underarm area.  A pocket is created to accommodate the implant.

This may be underneath the breast tissue or underneath the pectoral muscle.  After tailoring the size and shape of the pocket the implant is inserted and the incisions closed.  If sagging or drooping is a concern, a breast lift or mastopexy can be performed in conjunction with the augmentation.

Choosing The Right Size

You are an individual, and your breast augmentation should be just as unique as you are. Dr. Bass will work with you at the sizing visit to use multiple modalities to help identify the ideal breast size for your preferences.  At Bass Plastic Surgery, we utilize Vectra 3D imaging to visualize what breast size and shape look best in concert with the rest of the contours of your body.

Patients are encouraged to bring photos of their desired look to ensure both patient and Dr. Bass have the same visual reference. Modeling with sample implants in clothing will also be performed at the sizing visit to help you see what you look like at different sizes. Dr. Bass will consider how your breast contour will look with your entire body to advise you on the best way to achieve your desired look. The result? Together, we’ll help you discover a beauty that’s all your own.

Implant Selection And Implant Information

All implants currently used in the United States have a solid silicone shell. Today’s implants are filled with either a saline or a silicone gel.  You can rest assured that your safety and results come first, and there is much more information about the performance of modern implants than in times past.  Dr. Bass will review the manufacturer’s data and disclosures as mandated by FDA in depth so you are aware of possible risks and what is known about the implants at this time. Although you will enjoy many years of performance from your breast implants, all implants are devices which will eventually wear out necessitating further surgery for correction, replacement or removal.

What To Expect After Your Augmentation

Patients are able to return to a desk job and light socializing within a week after the procedure. Some exercise can be resumed two to three weeks after the surgery.

Results You’ll Love

Following your procedure, you can expect beautiful, soft breasts that are harmoniously balanced with each other and exquisitely complement your natural silhouette. Breasts will appear perky and more youthful. If a breast lift was also performed, your breasts will sit higher on your chest.

Dr. Bass understands that undergoing plastic surgery can be anxiety-inducing, and he partners with each patient to help them understand the process as well as set realistic expectations. Dr. Bass strives for subtle, elegant results that complement the patient’s body, ensuring a natural look every time.

Is Breast Augmentation Right For You?

If you feel dissatisfied with the size of your breasts, or your breasts are misshapen or asymmetrical, a breast augmentation can improve how you look and feel about your body. For those who have deflated breasts due to pregnancy and breastfeeding, this procedure can help restore your breasts to approximate your pre-pregnancy shape and size.

Breast augmentations are best suited for people  who are in good health and over the age of eighteen (22 for silicone gel implants). Patients should not be pregnant or breastfeeding, or have any active breast disease issues.

Skilled, Meticulous And Highly-trained

Credentials count. Experience is key to achieving safe, natural-looking results in breast augmentations. A surgeon who has been practicing for decades has the virtue of using that time to hone skills for predictable and consistent results.

Dr. Bass has been practicing for almost three decades and is widely recognized as a leader in the field. He was educated and trained at Cornell University and Columbia University, and completed his plastic surgery residency at NYU Medical Center where he also taught as an assistant professor for more than fifteen years.
