Subtly Reduce Signs Of Aging With A Blepharoplasty

As skin ages, it naturally loses its elasticity. The thin, sensitive skin of the eye area is particularly susceptible to wrinkles and laxity. A number of other aging changes take place in this region that are unrelated to the skin itself.  Fortunately, eyelid surgery can markedly reduce the signs of aging and results are even better when combined with a full suite of facial restoration treatments.

The Basics Of Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is performed on the upper and lower eyelids to restore a youthful look around the eye. A successful eyelid surgery will reduce bags under the eyes, minimize excess skin in the area, and diminish overall puffiness. Blepharoplasty is also sometimes recommended to correct drooping upper eyelids that obstruct vision.

How Does Eyelid Surgery Work?

During an upper eyelid surgery, incisions are made along natural folds in the skin in the upper lid. From there, lax skin is tailored out. For the lower eyelid, an external incision is often not necessary. Instead, Dr. Bass makes a transconjunctival incision, which is an incision inside the lower eyelid. The transconjunctival approach allows for the removal of excess fatty tissue which contributes to bags under the eyes.

Excess skin can be tailored out through small incisions if needed.  Sometimes the fat removed can be reinserted into the tear trough hollows to restore lost volume in this area. Fat grafting can also be used.  If laxity in lower eyelid needs to be corrected, the supporting ligament or musculature of the lower eyelid can be lifted and tightened in processes called canthopexy or canthoplasty.

Your Blepharoplasty Experience

Blepharoplasty takes approximately one hour and is performed in our fully accredited surgical facilities. Typically, local anesthesia with or without intravenous sedation is used. Afterwards, incisions are closed and cool compresses applied to minimize bruising and swelling.  Blepharoplasty in NYC is often performed in conjunction with a facelift, laser skin resurfacing, facial fat grafting or a chemical peel of the eyelids.  Dr. Bass will determine which treatments are appropriate for each individual’s stage of aging.

Recovery Process

You should expect to avoid sports, bending and lifting for two weeks following the procedure. Swelling and bruising are normal after eyelid surgery and typically subside enough to allow routine work and socializing within 5-7 days.  Sutures are typically removed within three to five days.  In the first few days, a minimum of activity, cool compresses and lubricating eye drops help minimize recovery.

Well-Rested And Refreshed

You can expect an overall younger, refreshed, and well-rested appearance. Folds in the contours of the upper eyelids will be reduced, as well as bags or puffiness in the lower eyelids.   You’ll enjoy a long-lasting transformation since the results of blepharoplasty are quite durable and last years, or in many cases, a decade or more.

Candidates For Eyelid Surgery in NYC

If you have puffy, sagging eyelids or noticeable bags under your eyes, blepharoplasty may be an effective corrective treatment for you. Those who experience obstructed vision due to excess skin folds may be able to see more clearly after eyelid surgery. Patients interested in this procedure should be in good general health and should not have any significant eye problems.

Blepharoplasty is not a suitable treatment for dark circles or sagging brows. Neither is it designed to eliminate the fine wrinkles around the eye area. Dr. Bass can incorporate appropriate solutions for those concerns as part of a more complete rejuvenation plan for your eyelid area.
